Job Description

About the role :

Clear Energy is a Hyderabad-based industrial energy company operating at the intersection of fuel, equipment, and software. We own and run steam generation infrastructure LPG-fired and biomass-fired boilers at customer sites across India under a Thermal-Energy-as-a-Service (TEaaS) model. The business spans fuel logistics, IBR-regulated equipment, field operations, B2B billing, and EPC partner workflows. We are not pre-revenue and not pre-product we are an established operating business with material revenue and an aggressive multi-year growth plan, and the team is small enough that what you build will be in production this quarter.

We are looking for a Senior Full-Stack Engineer to be one of the founding engineers building the product end-to-end backend services, web dashboards, and mobile apps for our sales, field, and operations teams. The systems touch real customers, real plants, and real money every day.

This is an individual-contributor role with founding-team seniority. You will own systems, ship to production, and be on-call for what you build. You will collaborate closely with the founder, a product manager, a part-time designer, and a second engineer.

What you'll do :

- Backend services : Design and build REST APIs, data models, background jobs, integrations with third-party services (payments, notifications, maps), and the supporting infrastructure (auth, RBAC, audit logging, observability).

- Web dashboard : Build a responsive admin/operations dashboard in React + TypeScript. Multiple modules across operations, finance, master data, and reporting.

- Mobile apps : Build consumer-facing and operator-facing mobile apps in React Native (or native, depending on requirements). Some apps need offline support and reliable real-world behaviour.

- DevOps : Set up and maintain CI/CD, cloud infrastructure (AWS), observability, and deployment pipelines. You don't need to be a DevOps specialist, but you should be comfortable owning the production environment for what you build.

- Quality + reliability : Write tests, review the other engineer's pull requests, debug production issues, contribute to runbooks. Take part in the on-call rota after launch.

- Product partnership : Read product specifications, ask the right questions, push back when something doesn't make sense, and commit fully once decisions are made.

Stack :

- Backend Node.js (NestJS) or Java (Spring Boot)

- Database PostgreSQL 15 + extensions, Redis

- Web React + TypeScript + Tailwind CSS

- Mobile React Native (cross-platform) and/or native Android (Kotlin)

- Cloud AWS (ap-south-1, Mumbai)

- Integrations Payment gateway, SMS gateway, push notifications, maps API, transactional email

- AI tooling Claude Code or Cursor (heavy use); GitHub Copilot acceptable

We use AI-coding tools (Claude Code or Cursor) heavily every commit, every test, every refactor. If you're allergic to AI tools, this isn't the right role. If you've already built production systems with AI assistance and have opinions on what works, we want to talk to you first.

Who we want :

Must-haves :

- 2+ years building production software, including 1+ years full-stack (you've shipped both backend services and frontend code that real users use).

- Production experience with at least one of : Node.js/TypeScript or Java/Kotlin.

- Production experience with React (web) and at least one mobile framework (React Native, Flutter, or native iOS/Android).

- Comfortable with relational databases at the schema level you've designed tables, written non-trivial queries, debugged a slow query with EXPLAIN.

- You've integrated with at least one payment gateway and one third-party API in production.

- Active user of Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent AI-coding tools and willing to talk specifically about how you use them effectively.

- You can read a long product specification document and ask the right ten questions.

- You write code that you'd be willing to maintain in 12 months.

Nice-to-have (any 2 is a strong signal) :

- Past work on cash-handling, finance, ledger-critical, or other systems where correctness matters.

- Past work in consumer apps, logistics, or last-mile delivery.

- Experience with offline-first mobile apps.

- Experience with geospatial work (PostGIS, Google Maps Platform, polygon queries).

- Experience with payment integrations beyond the basic happy path (refunds, webhooks, reconciliation).

- Telugu or Hindi for direct conversations with field operations teams.

- Have hired and onboarded the engineer who came after you on a previous project.

Mindset we're hiring for :

- You ship. You'd rather have a working v0.5 of the right thing than a perfect spec of the right thing.

- You can argue with the PM, the designer, the founder and then commit fully once the decision is made.

- You think about the customer who's affected by your code, not just the code.

- You can sit through a 1-hour conversation with a non-technical operations lead and come back with the right model not just write down what they said.

- You're comfortable with ambiguity in week 1 and demand clarity by week 4.

- You over-communicate in writing (commit messages, PR descriptions, ADRs).

Filters that will save us all time :

- If you want to be a tech lead with no IC work, this isn't the role.

- If you want to use this role to get into management in 6 months, this isn't the role.

- If you've never debugged a production payment failure at 11 PM, this is going to be a steep learning curve.

- If you can't read English-language documentation and product specs, this won't work.

- If you're looking for a 9 to 5 with no production responsibility, the on-call rota after launch is going to surprise you.
