Position Overview:

Volo Health is looking for a Full-Stack AI Engineer to build and ship AI-assisted features across our claims, member, and internal tooling platforms. You'll work across the stack from SvelteKit application code and MongoDB-backed services to the AI/automation layer that powers features like AI-assisted claims processing and fraud/waste/abuse detection shipping end-to-end, production-facing functionality rather than working in a single layer. This role reports into engineering leadership and works closely with backend, platform, and product teams on live, customer-facing systems.

Education:

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

- No specific certification required demonstrated project/production experience matters more.

Technical Skills:

- Strong full-stack JavaScript/TypeScript experience, comfortable working in a Node.js (ESM) environment end to end.

- Hands-on experience with modern front-end frameworks; ability to pick up SvelteKit (Svelte 5) and Tailwind CSS quickly, or direct prior experience with them.

- Experience building and integrating AI/LLM-powered features into production applications (e.g. AI-assisted workflows, automation pipelines, agent-based tooling).

- Solid experience with MongoDB (or another document/NoSQL database) using a native driver, without relying solely on an ORM/ODM.

- Comfortable with JSDoc-typed JavaScript as a substitute for full TypeScript, and/or willingness to work in that convention.

- Understanding of REST API design and integration, including third-party service integrations (e.g. transactional email via SMTP providers).

Good to Have:

- Experience building or extending AI coding/automation tooling (e.g. Claude Code or similar agentic/plugin-based developer tooling).

- Experience with process management and deployment basics for Node apps (e.g. PM2, nginx, reverse proxies, TLS termination via a load balancer).

- Experience with spreadsheet-based reporting/export functionality (e.g. via ExcelJS or similar libraries).

- Familiarity with migrating an application between database backends (e.g. Postgres/Supabase to MongoDB) or otherwise handling non-trivial data-layer transitions.

Preferred Domain Experience:

- Experience in health insurance, insurance technology, healthcare technology, fintech, or another regulated industry.

- Exposure to claims processing, fraud/waste/abuse detection, or other risk- and compliance-sensitive workflows where AI assists (but does not fully replace) human decision-making.

What We Look For:

- Comfort owning a feature end to end front end, back end, and the AI/automation layer rather than staying in one lane.

- Pragmatic judgment about where AI genuinely helps a workflow versus where it adds risk, especially in a regulated, data-sensitive domain.

- Strong written communication and ability to work with human checkpoints/review in the loop, given Volo's emphasis on governed, reviewed engineering processes.

- Bias toward shipping working, production-grade code over building elaborate systems prematurely.
