About the Role :
As the only company focused 100% on Java, Azul is building the Java platform for the modern cloud enterprise. Falcon is a key technology in Azul Platform Prime, a Just-In-Time compiler for Java bytecode based on LLVM. We are looking for an LLVM Compiler Engineer to help improve Falcon.
Key Responsibilities :
- Design, develop, and enhance compiler features and optimization techniques for the Falcon JIT compiler.
- Develop and optimize LLVM-based compilation pipelines for Java and other managed languages.
- Analyze compiler-generated machine code and implement optimizations to improve execution speed, throughput, and resource efficiency.
- Work on compiler intermediate representations (IR), instruction selection, code generation, register allocation, and other compiler optimization stages.
- Investigate and resolve complex compiler correctness, performance, and code-generation issues.
- Optimize generated code for modern processor architectures, including x86-64 and ARM64.
- Conduct performance benchmarking, profiling, and regression analysis to identify optimization opportunities.
- Collaborate with compiler, runtime, and performance engineering teams to improve end-to-end application performance.
- Contribute enhancements, fixes, and research-driven improvements to LLVM and related open-source projects.
- Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, and collaborative development across a geographically distributed team.
Minimum Requirements :
- Strong C/C++ design and coding skills
- 5+ years of experience developing LLVM compilers, or transferable experience with another compiler
- Strong background in compiler theory and development
Preferred Experience :
- Solid experience in developing language runtimes and JIT compilers
- Thorough knowledge of x86_64 and/or ARM64 instruction sets and optimizations
- Performance analysis experience
- Experience with Java, Scala or Kotlin
- PhD in Computer Science, and/or significant research experience
