Softpath Technologies - Senior Mainframe Developer - COBOL/JCL

Role : Sr. Mainframe developer

Location : Pune

Experience : 9+ years

Key Responsibilities :

1. Application Development & Maintenance:

- Design, develop, test, and implement mainframe-based applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, VSAM.

- Analyze business requirements and translate them into scalable, efficient solutions.

- Participate in the full SDLC, including requirement analysis, design, coding, testing, deployment, and support.

2. Production Support & Issue Resolution:

- Provide L2/L3 production support for mainframe applications and ensure timely resolution of incidents and problems.

- Perform root cause analysis and implement permanent fixes for recurring issues.

- Work in on-call rotations for production support (if required).

3. Code Review & Optimization:

- Conduct code reviews, ensuring adherence to best practices and performance standards.

- Optimize performance of batch jobs and online transactions.

- Recommend and implement system enhancements or improvements.

4. Database Management:

- Write and optimize SQL queries for DB2 and other mainframe databases.

- Understand and handle data modeling, normalization, and database performance tuning.

5. Mainframe Modernization (Optional):

- Participate in projects involving API integration, cloud migration, or DevOps enablement for mainframe systems.

- Exposure to tools like Zowe, IBM Z Open Editor, or Micro Focus is a plus.

6. Collaboration & Documentation:

- Interact with cross-functional teams including QA, BA, infrastructure, and security.

- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and deployment plans.

- Mentor junior team members and provide technical leadership when required.

Required Skills & Qualifications :

Core Technical Skills :

Strong hands-on experience in :

- COBOL

- JCL

- DB2

- VSAM

- CICS

- Experience in Batch and Online Processing

- Good understanding of Mainframe file structures, utilities (IDCAMS, IEBGENER, SORT, etc.)

Tools :

- TSO/ISPF, Endevor/Changeman, File-Aid, Xpediter, SDSF

- Knowledge of Job Scheduling tools (Control-M, CA-7, etc.)

Soft Skills :

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

- Excellent communication and stakeholder management

- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or in a team

- Experience working in Agile/Waterfall methodologies
