Role Overview:
Product Labs builds and maintains hundreds of internal environments of our enterprise Java application, used by Client Services and Product Engineering teams. This role sits between IT operations, QA, and R&D, closer to DevOps than to any of them.
You will install, upgrade, and maintain application environments, investigate failures down to the root cause, and give developers clear, evidence-backed findings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Environment Lifecycle: Provision, install, upgrade, clone, refresh, and decommission application environments on VMs and containers according to Product Labs standards.
- Upgrade and Configuration Management: Run version upgrades, carry configuration and customizations forward, and pinpoint exactly where an upgrade fails, whether in the installer, database migration, app server configuration, or the application itself.
- Root-Cause Analysis: Trace failures through Java application logs, stack traces, app server and JVM diagnostics, and database queries.
- Database Operations: Back up, restore, and refresh databases, run upgrade scripts, and troubleshoot locking, permission, and collation issues.
- Developer Escalation: When an issue is a product defect, give R&D a documented root cause with logs, reproduction steps, environment details, and likely problem areas. Apply configuration fixes and workarounds within your scope.
- Validation: Smoke test environments after installs and upgrades, reproduce reported issues, and verify fixes.
- Requester Support: Work Jira tickets from internal teams, set clear expectations, and keep requesters updated.
- Automation: Use and improve existing scripts and pipelines (Jenkins, Ansible, PowerShell, Bash) to reduce manual steps.
- Knowledge Capture: Turn every resolved issue into a runbook or knowledge base entry in Confluence.
Qualifications & Skills:
- 3 - 5 years in application support, environment engineering, or DevOps for Java enterprise applications
- Strong Java log and stack trace analysis, plus JVM basics (heap, garbage collection, thread dumps)
- Hands-on WildFly (standalone configuration, data sources, JDBC drivers, deployments); Quarkus or containerized Java deployments a plus
- Solid SQL on MSSQL and PostgreSQL, including backup and restore
- Windows Server and Linux administration; scripting in PowerShell, Bash, or Python
- Working knowledge of Docker, VMs, DNS, ports, and TLS certificates
- Basic QA skills for reproduction and validation
- Uses AI-assisted tools effectively for research and log analysis, while following data handling rules (no customer data or proprietary code in public tools)
- Writes clear technical summaries for developers and clear status updates for non-technical requesters
- Able to ramp up quickly from documentation and work across US and EU time zones as needed
