We are seeking a Principal DevOps Platform Architect to provide technical direction for enterprise-wide cloud platform engineering and DevOps transformation initiatives.
The role will own the architectural vision, engineering standards, platform strategy, and modernization roadmap across large-scale multi-cloud environments.
The candidate will operate at an enterprise architecture level, partnering with senior technology stakeholders, engineering leaders, security teams, and application architects to define scalable, secure, resilient, and standardized platform capabilities.
This role is focused on strategic technical ownership and architecture governance rather than day-to-day pipeline or infrastructure administration.
Key Responsibilities :
Enterprise Platform Strategy :
- Define the long-term architecture and engineering strategy for enterprise cloud platforms.
- Establish reference architectures and technology standards across AWS, Azure, and GCP.
- Define the target-state architecture for cloud-native platforms and developer infrastructure.
- Drive enterprise-wide platform modernization and cloud transformation programs.
- Establish standardized platform capabilities that can be adopted across multiple engineering organizations.
- Evaluate emerging cloud and platform engineering technologies and define their adoption strategy.
Cloud Architecture & Governance :
- Design highly scalable, resilient, and secure multi-cloud architecture patterns.
- Define standards for Kubernetes, networking, identity, compute, storage, observability, and platform services.
- Establish cloud governance frameworks covering security, reliability, cost management, compliance, and operational standards.
- Review and govern architecture decisions for critical platform initiatives.
- Define architectural guardrails and reusable engineering patterns across cloud environments.
- Drive technology rationalization and standardization across complex enterprise environments.
Internal Developer Platform :
- Define the enterprise strategy for Internal Developer Platforms and developer self-service.
- Architect developer portals, Golden Paths, reusable platform services, and standardized engineering workflows.
- Establish platform product principles focused on developer experience and engineering productivity.
- Define the architecture for Backstage, Crossplane, ArgoCD, and other platform engineering capabilities where appropriate.
- Establish standards for platform APIs, reusable templates, service catalogs, and automated provisioning.
- Drive adoption of platform capabilities across multiple engineering teams.
DevOps & Engineering Transformation :
- Define enterprise CI/CD and GitOps architecture standards.
- Establish DevSecOps frameworks integrating security throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
- Drive modernization of legacy deployment and infrastructure processes.
- Define enterprise standards for Infrastructure as Code and automated environment provisioning.
- Establish engineering metrics to measure deployment efficiency, reliability, automation, and developer productivity.
- Provide technical leadership for large-scale DevOps transformation programs.
Reliability & Operational Excellence :
- Establish enterprise SRE and reliability engineering frameworks.
- Define platform-wide SLIs, SLOs, SLAs, reliability objectives, and operational standards.
- Architect enterprise observability strategies covering metrics, logs, traces, alerting, and distributed systems.
- Define approaches for resilience engineering, disaster recovery, business continuity, and capacity planning.
- Provide architectural direction during critical incidents and major production issues.
- Drive systemic improvements based on incident trends and root cause analysis.
Security Architecture :
- Define cloud and platform security architecture across multi-cloud environments.
- Establish enterprise standards for IAM, secrets management, workload identity, container security, and policy enforcement.
- Define DevSecOps architecture and security automation strategies.
- Establish policy-as-code and automated compliance frameworks.
- Partner with enterprise security and risk teams to ensure platform architectures meet regulatory and organizational requirements.
Technology Leadership :
- Lead architecture reviews and technical design discussions involving senior engineering stakeholders.
- Mentor principal engineers, architects, and senior platform engineering teams.
- Establish engineering principles, technical standards, and architectural governance.
- Influence technology decisions across multiple engineering organizations.
- Communicate complex architectural decisions and technology roadmaps to senior leadership.
- Build consensus across engineering, security, infrastructure, product, and architecture stakeholders.
Required Skills :
- 16+ years of experience in DevOps, cloud engineering, platform engineering, infrastructure architecture, or related areas.
- Deep expertise in enterprise cloud architecture across AWS, Azure, and GCP.
- Strong expertise in Kubernetes and cloud-native architecture.
- Extensive experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code.
- Strong understanding of GitOps, CI/CD architecture, and DevSecOps.
- Experience designing Internal Developer Platforms and developer self-service ecosystems.
- Strong understanding of Backstage, ArgoCD, Crossplane, or comparable platform technologies.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices, networking, security, and reliability engineering.
- Experience designing enterprise observability strategies using technologies such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, Splunk, ELK, and OpenTelemetry.
- Strong understanding of cloud IAM, secrets management, policy-as-code, and container security.
- Strong programming/scripting knowledge in one or more languages such as Python, Go, Bash, or PowerShell.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- AWS, Azure, or GCP professional-level certifications are desirable.
- Experience architecting platforms for large enterprises or hyperscale environments.
- Experience leading multi-year cloud transformation or platform modernization programs.
- Strong understanding of FinOps, cloud governance, and enterprise architecture frameworks.
Candidate Profile :
- Enterprise-level cloud and platform architecture experience.
- Strong ability to translate business and engineering requirements into scalable platform strategies.
- Proven experience influencing architecture decisions across multiple engineering teams.
- Strong technical leadership without relying solely on operational ownership.
- Excellent understanding of cloud-native architecture, platform engineering, SRE, security, and developer experience.
- Ability to define technology roadmaps and establish organization-wide engineering standards.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
