Responsibilities :
- Design and operate scalable, secure, and automated MySQL, PostgreSQL infrastructure on AWS using services such as RDS or self-managed EC2 instances.
- Champion a culture of automation over manual intervention, reducing repetitive tasks through Infrastructure-as-Code (e. g., Terraform) and scripting (Python, Bash, Go).
- Proactively identify areas of operational toil and implement automated solutions to reduce manual errors, improve efficiency, and increase engineering velocity.
- Lead performance tuning at all levelsqueries, schema, indexes, and underlying systems, ensuring low-latency, high-throughput access patterns.
- Own the lifecycle and execution of major MySQL, PostgreSQL version upgrades, including planning, backward compatibility, rollback readiness, and automation of upgrade workflows.
- Architect and manage scale-out strategies using replication, sharding, or middleware such as ProxySQL, Vitess, or Percona.
- Implement efficient partitioning and data archival strategies to support long-term data retention, cost management, and compliance.
- Ensure alignment with security and compliance standards (SOC 2 PCI DSS, ISO 27001), implementing encryption, role-based access, auditing, and data classification controls.
- Bring forth database security hardening recommendations and work with the stakeholders to implement and secure the systems.
- Build observability into the database stack using tools like CloudWatch, PMM, or Prometheus/Grafana for real-time health insights and proactive alerting.
- Support high-severity incident response, conduct RCA/postmortems, and lead improvements to prevent recurrence.
- Mentor engineers across teams, set technical standards for DB schema architecture, DB operations, and advocate for reliability best practices.
- Work with multiple teams to identify existing opportunities to optimise and fine-tune their queries, DB access patterns and the existing DB system infrastructure.
Requirements:
- 8+ years of experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL in high-volume, production environments.
- 5+ years of experience operating MySQL, PostgreSQL workloads on AWS, using RDS or EC2-based deployments.
- Strong hands-on experience with query optimisation, schema design, and a deep understanding of MySQL internals (InnoDB, replication, optimisers).
- Proven track record of reducing toil through automation and standardisation of database operations.
- Proficiency in automation and scripting (e. g., Python, Bash, Go), and experience with IaC tools such as Terraform.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes as a computing platform and reliably hosting database systems or utilities on Kubernetes.
- Experience in architecting and executing major version upgrades of MySQL, with zero/minimal downtime.
- Deep knowledge of scale-out architectures and solutions like Vitess, ProxySQL, or custom replication strategies.
- Expertise in partitioning, archival, and data lifecycle management strategies for performance and cost efficiency.
- Strong familiarity with compliance and security frameworks, including SOC 2 PCI DSS, and ISO/IEC 27001
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with a demonstrated ability to influence engineering and product decisions.
- Experience building or contributing to internal DBaaS platforms or self-service tooling.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes-based database orchestration and operators (e. g., Vitess Operator, Orchestrator).
- Experience with performance benchmarking at scale (QPS, TPS, data volume > TBs).
- Contributions to internal large-scale reliability engineering projects.
