Role Overview :

We are looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer to lead the design and development of next-generation usage-based billing platforms powering modern SaaS and AI-driven businesses. This role focuses on building highly scalable distributed systems capable of processing hundreds of thousands of requests per second while enabling real-time billing, metering, and monetization.

As a technical leader, you will combine hands-on engineering with architectural leadership, mentoring, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver reliable, cloud-native platforms that scale globally.

Key Responsibilities :

Technical Leadership :

- Lead the architecture, design, and development of large-scale distributed backend systems.

- Drive technical strategy and influence architectural decisions across engineering teams.

- Establish engineering best practices focused on scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability.

- Lead by example through hands-on coding, technical reviews, and design discussions.

Platform Engineering :

- Design and build highly available usage metering, aggregation, and billing services.

- Develop distributed systems capable of handling high-throughput, low-latency workloads.

- Build scalable microservices and cloud-native platforms supporting enterprise SaaS applications.

- Optimize system performance, storage, and infrastructure costs.

Engineering Excellence :

- Ensure software quality through code reviews, testing strategies, CI/CD automation, and observability.

- Identify and resolve production bottlenecks affecting scalability, reliability, and customer experience.

- Promote engineering standards and operational excellence across teams.

- Drive adoption of modern development practices and AI-assisted engineering workflows.

People Leadership & Mentorship :

- Mentor engineers and technical leaders across multiple teams.

- Support career development through coaching, technical guidance, and continuous learning.

- Foster a culture of innovation, ownership, accountability, and customer-centric engineering.

- Collaborate with hiring teams to attract and develop top engineering talent.

Cross-functional Collaboration :

- Partner closely with Product Management, Engineering, Infrastructure, and Business teams.

- Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

- Drive technical roadmap planning while balancing short-term delivery and long-term platform evolution.

Required Qualifications :

- 12+ years of software engineering experience building enterprise-scale SaaS platforms.

- Proven experience designing and operating high-scale distributed backend systems.

- Strong expertise in Java and backend application development.

- Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices, and cloud-native architectures.

- Experience building event-driven systems using Kafka or similar messaging platforms.

- Strong knowledge of OLTP and OLAP databases.

- Experience with AWS and cloud-native infrastructure.

- Experience building and scaling microservices architectures.

- Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, containerization, and modern software engineering practices.

- Experience leading technical teams and mentoring senior engineers.

- Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications :

- Experience as a Founder, CTO, Founding Engineer, or early-stage startup technical leader.

- Experience building AI-powered products or automation platforms.

- Knowledge of AI-assisted development and agentic workflows.

- Experience with frontend technologies such as React or Vue.js.

- Expertise in enterprise-scale monitoring and observability platforms.

- Experience building high-scale billing, payments, subscription, or monetization platforms.
