Position Overview :


Applied Systems, Inc., a worldwide leader in insurance technology, is currently searching for a Senior Systems Engineer.

This role will be the primary owner of our Google Cloud Platform (GCP) environments, responsible for designing, building, and operating cloud-native infrastructure at enterprise scale.

The role carries a heavy focus on cloud automation, Infrastructure as Code, GCP-native services, and security best practices.

What Youll Do :

GCP Infrastructure & Architecture :

- Design, build, and maintain scalable, secure, and highly available GCP environments across projects and organizations.

- Architect and deploy GCP services including Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, BigQuery, Pub/Sub, Cloud Storage, VPC, and more.

- Define and enforce GCP landing zone standards, including organization policies, resource hierarchy, and IAM governance.

- Lead GCP network design including VPC architecture, Shared VPC, Cloud Interconnect, Cloud NAT, and firewall policy management.

Infrastructure as Code & Automation :

- Develop and maintain Terraform modules for GCP resource provisioning, ensuring reusable, version-controlled infrastructure.

- Build and manage CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, Cloud Build, or equivalent) for automated infrastructure deployment and testing.

- Develop automation scripts and tooling using Python, Bash, or PowerShell to streamline operational tasks.

- Maintain and evolve GitOps workflows for infrastructure lifecycle management.

Operations & Reliability :

- Implement and manage monitoring, alerting, and observability solutions using Google Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Logging, DataDog and SigNoz.

- Develop and maintain runbooks and playbooks to guide all skill levels through incident response procedures.

- Perform root cause analysis (RCA) as part of the incident response process and document findings.

- Respond to escalated infrastructure service desk tickets and resolve complex GCP-related issues.

- Perform upgrades and maintenance activities during off-hours change windows.

- Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours incidents (approximately one week every two months).

Security & Compliance :

- Partner with the Information Security organization to identify, prioritize, and remediate cloud security vulnerabilities.

- Implement and enforce GCP security controls including CSPM, VPC Service Controls, Secret Manager, and Binary Authorization.

- Ensure compliance with organizational policies and industry frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001, etc.) within GCP environments.

Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity :

- Define and implement disaster recovery strategies for GCP-hosted workloads.

- Conduct periodic DR drills and document recovery time/point objectives (RTO/RPO).

Collaboration & Documentation :

- Create and maintain thorough infrastructure documentation, architecture diagrams, and operational guides.

- Collaborate cross-functionally with application teams, security, and leadership to align infrastructure with business goals.

- Mentor junior engineers and promote cloud best practices across the team.

- Perform other duties as assigned by immediate manager or management team.

Key Performance Outcomes :

- Projects completed within designated timeframes and scope.

- Full compliance with Change Management policies and procedures.

- GCP projects and change requests executed on schedule with minimal downtime or human error.

- Escalated incidents managed efficiently with appropriate internal escalation and communication.

- Cloud infrastructure maintained at or above agreed SLA/uptime targets.

Were Excited To Learn More About You :

Education & Experience :

- High School diploma required; BA/BS degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field preferred.

- 7+ years of experience as a senior engineer in a mid-to-large-scale enterprise environment.

- 4+ years of hands-on, production-grade experience with Google Cloud Platform.

Technical Skills/Required :

- Google Cloud Platform (GCP): Deep expertise across core services Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, VPC, IAM, Cloud Armor, etc.

- Terraform: Writing and maintaining production Terraform modules for GCP (and ideally Azure).

- CI/CD: Hands-on experience with GitLab CI, Cloud Build, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins.

- Scripting & Automation: Python and/or Bash for infrastructure automation.

- Networking: Strong understanding of VPC design, BGP, DNS, load balancing, and hybrid connectivity (Cloud Interconnect / VPN).

- GCP IAM & Security: Organization policies, service accounts, Workload Identity, VPC Service Controls.

- Monitoring & Observability: Google Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Logging, and/or DataDog.

Professional Skills :

- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality.

You May Have Other Skills, Including :

- Azure: Experience with Azure cloud services and IaC in Azure environments.

- GCP Professional Certification(s): Cloud Architect, Cloud DevOps Engineer, or equivalent.

- Linux system administration.

- Kubernetes / GKE advanced operations (Autopilot, multi-cluster, service mesh).

- Ansible or other configuration management tools.

- Experience with API-driven automation (Google APIs, Microsoft Graph, Jira, Okta).

- Data center migration experience.
