Senior Tableau Developer :

Senior Tableau Developer with 5 - 7 years of hands-on Tableau experience to support a large-scale dashboard modernization and refactoring initiative. This role requires a highly independent, detail-oriented developer who can operate effectively with high-level direction, break ambiguous objectives into actionable work, and drive deliverables through completion.

A significant part of this role will involve reverse engineering an existing Tableau environment, understanding how current dashboards have been constructed, identifying underlying data sources and business logic, and thoroughly documenting the current state before supporting redesign and refactoring efforts.

Key Responsibilities :

- Design, develop, enhance, and maintain complex Tableau dashboards and visualizations.

- Independently translate high-level business and technical objectives into detailed tasks, work plans, and deliverables.

- Reverse engineer existing Tableau dashboards, workbooks, calculations, filters, parameters, data connections, and dependencies.

- Trace dashboards back to their underlying data sources, including databases, views, tables, extracts, custom SQL, and other integrations.

- Document existing dashboard architecture, data lineage, calculations, business rules, dependencies, and source-system relationships.

- Identify redundant, outdated, or unnecessarily complex dashboard components and recommend opportunities for simplification and consolidation.

- Refactor and modernize existing dashboards while maintaining required business functionality and reporting accuracy.

- Partner with business stakeholders, analysts, data engineers, and technical teams to clarify requirements and validate existing reporting logic.

- Analyze undocumented or poorly documented solutions and independently determine how they function.

- Identify gaps, risks, assumptions, and dependencies early and proactively drive them toward resolution.

- Develop and maintain technical documentation to support long-term maintainability of the Tableau reporting environment.

- Apply Tableau development and visualization best practices, including performance optimization, usability, and maintainability.

- Validate refactored dashboards against existing solutions to ensure calculations, metrics, filters, and outputs remain accurate.

- Manage multiple workstreams and priorities with limited day-to-day oversight.

Required Qualifications :

- 5 - 7 years of professional Tableau development experience, including significant experience building and maintaining enterprise-scale dashboards.

- Advanced knowledge of Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server/Cloud.

- Strong experience with calculated fields, table calculations, Level of Detail (LOD) expressions, parameters, sets, filters, dashboard actions, and complex visualization techniques.

- Demonstrated ability to reverse engineer existing Tableau workbooks and dashboards and understand solutions created by other developers.

- Strong understanding of relational data structures, data modeling, and data relationships.

- Advanced SQL skills with the ability to analyze queries, joins, aggregations, views, and source data structures.

- Experience tracing reporting outputs through multiple layers of data sources and transformations.

- Strong technical documentation skills, including documenting data lineage, dashboard logic, business rules, calculations, and dependencies.

- Demonstrated ability to work independently with high-level direction rather than detailed task-level instructions.

- Ability to decompose ambiguous or complex objectives into a structured plan and independently execute against that plan.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly when working with legacy or poorly documented solutions.

- Strong communication skills and the ability to work directly with both technical and business stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications :

- Experience supporting large-scale Tableau modernization, migration, consolidation, or refactoring programs.

- Experience working in consulting or other client-facing environments.

- Experience with enterprise data warehouses and modern cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, or BigQuery.

- Familiarity with Tableau metadata, workbook XML, Tableau APIs, or other techniques for analyzing Tableau environments at scale.

- Experience with performance tuning and optimization of Tableau dashboards and underlying queries.

- Experience establishing Tableau development standards, reusable patterns, and documentation practices.
