Position - Principal Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE)

Job Overview :

Lead the architecture and automation of scalable, secure MySQL and PostgreSQL databases on AWS for a high-volume ecommerce platform. Drive an automation-first culture to reduce manual toil, optimize performance, ensure compliance with SOC 2, PCI DSS, and ISO 27001, and implement efficient data partitioning and archival strategies.

Key Responsibilities :

- Design, operate, and automate MySQL/PostgreSQL infrastructure on AWS (RDS or self-managed EC2).

- Reduce manual tasks through Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform) and scripting (Python, Bash, Go).

- Optimize query, schema, index, and system performance for low latency and high throughput.

- Plan and execute major MySQL/PostgreSQL version upgrades with rollback readiness.

- Architect scale-out strategies using replication, sharding, or middleware (ProxySQL, Vitess).

- Implement data lifecycle management with partitioning and archival for cost and compliance.

- Ensure database security and compliance (SOC 2, PCI DSS, ISO 27001) with encryption and auditing.

- Build observability and monitoring via CloudWatch, PMM, Prometheus, or Grafana.

- Lead incident response, root cause analysis, and preventive improvements.

- Mentor engineers and set technical standards for DB operations and architecture.

Required Skills and Experience :

- 10+ years working with MySQL/PostgreSQL in high-volume production environments.

- 5+ years managing MySQL/PostgreSQL on AWS (RDS or EC2).

- Expertise in query optimization, schema design, MySQL internals (InnoDB, replication).

- Proficient in automation/scripting (Python, Bash, Go) and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform).

- Familiarity with Kubernetes-based database hosting and operators.

- Experience with zero-downtime major database version upgrades.

- Knowledge of scale-out solutions like Vitess or ProxySQL.

- Strong understanding of compliance frameworks SOC 2, PCI DSS, ISO 27001.

- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
