Platform Engineer Kubernetes (Omnistore POS)
Position Summary :
BT is seeking a Kubernetes-focused DevOps/Platform Engineer to own the deployment, scaling, and operational reliability of the Omnistore POS platform's Central Layer running in a containerized Kubernetes environment.
This role owns the Kubernetes runtime across PROD, Pre-Prod, UAT, and Performance Testing environments, while Docker is used strictly within the CI/CD release pipeline (image builds, artifact packaging) rather than as a runtime orchestrator.
Key Responsibilities :
Kubernetes Runtime Management :
- Own configuration and lifecycle of worker nodes across environments (3 primary + 2 auto-scale for PROD; 2 + 1 auto-scale for UAT/PT and Pre-Prod)
- Manage pod scaling policies, targeting 2 replicas per service baseline with auto-scale rules tied to load patterns
- Coordinate with the Kubernetes platform provider on cluster/control plane management (cluster is provider-managed, not self-hosted)
- Maintain cluster-level infrastructure : load balancers, ingress controllers, firewalls, and RBAC policies
Release Pipeline (Docker-Scoped) :
- Build and maintain Docker-based CI/CD pipelines to package microservices (JAR/WAR) into container images
- Own image versioning, tagging, and promotion strategy from build through PROD deployment
- Ensure Docker is confined to build/packaging stages; no Docker Compose or standalone Docker runtime in any environment
Backend Services & Data Layer :
- Support containerized SymmetricDS pods for data synchronization across Central and Register layers
- Coordinate with infrastructure teams on standalone backend jobs running on Red Hat Linux (Data Loader, Middleware, Item Jobs, Safe Summary Job, Retry Job)
- Support MSSQL Server Active-Active cluster configuration for high availability across PROD, Pre-Prod, and UAT/PT
Environment Parity & Testing Support :
- Maintain environment parity across PROD, Pre-Prod, UAT, and Performance Testing per the defined worker node and auto-scale specs
- Support Pre-Prod bootstrap/master data loading processes sourced from UAT
- Partner with QA/Performance teams to validate auto-scaling and failover behavior under load
Operational Reliability :
- Monitor pod health, resource utilization, and auto-scaling triggers across worker nodes
- Lead incident response and root cause analysis for Kubernetes-related production issues
- Document runbooks for cluster operations, scaling events, and disaster recovery
Required Qualifications :
- 4+ years of hands-on Kubernetes administration in production environments
- Strong experience with Docker for image builds and CI/CD pipeline integration (not Docker Compose runtime)
- Experience with Java-based application stacks (Tomcat, OpenJDK 21, WAR/JAR deployments)
- Familiarity with database high-availability configurations (MSSQL Active-Active clustering or equivalent)
- Experience with data replication/synchronization tools (SymmetricDS or similar) in containerized environments
- Working knowledge of RBAC, load balancer configuration, and firewall/network policies in Kubernetes
- Experience supporting multi-environment deployments (PROD, Pre-Prod, UAT, Performance Testing) with environment parity requirements
Preferred Qualifications :
- Experience with retail POS systems or Omnistore specifically
- Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) server administration
- Background supporting hybrid on-prem/containerized modernization initiatives
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL (register-layer data stores)
- Experience working with offshore/vendor engineering partners
