Role Overview :

We are seeking a hands-on Java Software Architect to lead the assessment, modernisation, and migration of enterprise Java applications. This role requires a strong technical leader who can define and execute modernisation strategies, address platform compatibility challenges, and leverage AI-assisted engineering practices to accelerate application assessment, code remediation, testing, and delivery.

Key Responsibilities :

- Lead architecture assessment, modernisation planning, and migration of enterprise Java applications.

- Define and drive the technical architecture and implementation approach for complex Java-based enterprise applications.

- Assess application dependencies, frameworks, integrations, infrastructure components, and security controls to identify migration impacts and remediation requirements.

- Design scalable, resilient, secure, and high-performing systems using Java and modern architectural patterns.

- Establish architectural standards, design principles, coding guidelines, and technology best practices covering security, scalability, maintainability, performance, and supportability.

- Define migration patterns for Java/Jakarta EE compatibility, library upgrades, API replacements, and application server modernisation.

- Create architecture diagrams, technical specifications, solution designs, and migration runbooks.

- Provide hands-on architectural and technical guidance to development teams throughout implementation.

- Proactively identify technical risks, compatibility issues, dependencies, and blockers and drive them toward resolution.

- Lead technical discussions with client architects, application teams, infrastructure, security, database, QA, and DevOps teams.

- Design and implement integration solutions using REST APIs, messaging platforms, event-driven architectures, and enterprise integration patterns.

- Support troubleshooting of complex issues and provide architectural recommendations and solutions.

- Support technical estimation, implementation planning, design reviews, architecture governance, and technical decision-making.

- Leverage AI-assisted development and modernisation tools for application discovery, code analysis, remediation, testing, documentation, and impact assessment.

- Define AI-assisted engineering practices, quality controls, and governance to ensure AI-generated outputs are validated, secure, and production-ready.

- Mentor developers and technical leads, promoting engineering excellence and technical best practices.

Required Experience & Skills :

- Strong experience in Java/J2EE enterprise application architecture and software development.

- Proven experience migrating or modernising enterprise applications hosted on JBoss EAP/ Red Hat application platforms, including EAP version upgrades and platform transformations.

- Experience assessing and remediating applications for Java/Jakarta EE compatibility and modernisation requirements.

- Strong knowledge of modern Java enterprise frameworks, application servers, APIs, persistence frameworks, databases, security frameworks, and integration technologies.

- Experience with application modernisation, technology upgrades, migration, re-platforming, and technical debt reduction initiatives.

- Good understanding of cloud-native architectures, DevOps, CI/CD, application security, and modern engineering practices.

- Experience with enterprise integration patterns, REST services, messaging solutions, event-driven architectures, and distributed systems.

- Experience with AI coding assistants and AI-based development, testing, or modernisation tools.

- Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate technical options, identify trade-offs, and provide clear architectural recommendations.

- Excellent troubleshooting, performance optimisation, and root-cause analysis capabilities.

- Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to development teams.

Preferred Skills :

- Experience with JBoss EAP 7.x and EAP 8.x environments.

- Prior hands-on software development experience building, enhancing, and supporting large-scale Java enterprise applications.

- Ability to perform code-level assessments, identify modernisation opportunities, and provide practical remediation guidance to engineering teams.

- Experience working directly with legacy application codebases and driving modernisation initiatives from assessment through implementation.

- Experience implementing AI-driven SDLC practices using AWS Kiro.

- Experience with Migration Toolkit for Applications (MTA), or equivalent migration assessment and modernisation tools.

- Good understanding of cloud-native architectures (AWS preferrable), containerisation, OpenShift/Kubernetes, DevOps, CI/CD, application security, and modern engineering practices.

- Knowledge of DevSecOps practices, application security modernisation, and vulnerability remediation.

- Relevant certifications in Java, Red Hat, Cloud, or Enterprise Architecture are advantageous.

Experience:

- 12+ years of IT experience with significant experience in Java application development, architecture, and technical leadership.

- Proven track record leading complex application modernisation, migration, or transformation initiatives.

- Experience delivering enterprise-scale programs involving multiple applications, development teams, and stakeholders.

- Experience working in large and complex enterprise environments with mission-critical applications.
