Role Overview :

We are seeking a Software Development Manager Backend to lead a high-performing team of backend engineers building distributed, scalable, and highly available services using Java and AWS.

In this role, you will define the architecture, development standards, and operational practices for mission-critical backend systems that power Rings suite of connected security products. You will lead the development of cloud-native services focused on performance, reliability, and security, working closely with cross-functional stakeholders across engineering, product, and operations.

Key Responsibilities :

Technical Leadership :

- Own and lead the backend architecture for highly scalable microservices and APIs using Java and AWS technologies.

- Guide the team in building fault-tolerant and high-throughput systems to support real-time device interactions and user data.

- Drive backend-focused engineering best practices such as code quality, testing, CI/CD, observability, and automated deployment.

Team Management :

- Lead and mentor a team of backend engineers through the entire SDLC design, development, testing, and deployment.

- Set clear goals and performance standards, perform code reviews, and foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture.

- Recruit, onboard, and develop engineering talent to build a strong technical bench.

Project Execution :

- Collaborate with Product Managers and Technical Program Managers to define backend requirements, estimate effort, and prioritize delivery.

- Manage sprint planning, execution, and reporting using Agile/Scrum methodologies.

- Ensure backend systems meet Rings standards for scalability, latency, security, and operational excellence.

Operational Excellence :

- Build systems that are production-ready from day one with full monitoring, alerting, fault tolerance, and automated recovery.

- Define SLAs and ensure backend service availability, durability, and performance.

- Lead operational reviews, incident retrospectives, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Technical Environment :

- Languages & Frameworks: Java 11+, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, Gradle/Maven

- Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS (Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, SQS, SNS, Kinesis, API Gateway, CloudWatch)

- CI/CD & DevOps: Jenkins, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, CodePipeline, Terraform/CloudFormation

- Architecture: Microservices, Event-Driven Architecture, Serverless, Multi-tenant APIs

- Monitoring & Logging: CloudWatch, Elasticsearch, Kibana, Prometheus/Grafana

Basic Qualifications :

- 7+ years of backend engineering experience with a strong focus on Java and distributed systems.

- 3+ years of engineering leadership experience managing backend teams.

- Proven track record in designing and scaling microservices in a production-grade AWS environment.

- Deep understanding of system design, data modeling, asynchronous processing, and RESTful APIs.

- Experience with Agile development practices, CI/CD pipelines, and operational readiness.
