Cognizant - Mainframe Developer - JCL/COBOL

Role Overview :

We are looking for a Mainframe Developer with 5 - 8 years of experience to develop, enhance, test, and support enterprise applications running on IBM mainframe environments. The candidate will work as part of a technical delivery team and will be responsible for application development, batch processing, database integration, production support, and defect resolution.

Key Responsibilities :

- Develop, enhance, and maintain mainframe applications based on functional requirements.

- Write and modify COBOL programs for batch and online processing.

- Create and maintain JCL jobs for application execution and batch processing.

- Work with DB2 databases for data retrieval, updates, and application processing.

- Develop and maintain CICS transactions where required.

- Work with VSAM files and other mainframe data structures.

- Analyze functional requirements and prepare technical solutions.

- Perform unit testing, debugging, and defect fixing.

- Participate in integration and system testing activities.

- Investigate application and batch-job failures and resolve technical issues.

- Support production incidents and perform root-cause analysis.

- Optimize SQL queries and application processing where required.

- Participate in code reviews and follow established development standards.

- Work closely with business analysts, QA teams, senior developers, and production support teams.

- Support application releases and production deployments.

- Prepare technical documentation and support knowledge-transfer activities.

- Participate in Agile ceremonies, sprint planning, estimation, and status meetings.

Tech Stack :

- COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, VSAM, SQL, Mainframe batch processing

Required Experience :

- 5 - 8 years of experience in mainframe application development.

- Strong hands-on experience with COBOL and JCL.

- Good experience with DB2 and SQL.

- Working knowledge of CICS and VSAM.

- Experience in application development, testing, debugging, and production support.

- Good understanding of SDLC and software development practices.

- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

- Good communication and teamwork capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications :

- Experience in Banking, Financial Services, Insurance, Retail, or enterprise technology environments.

- Exposure to MQ, APIs, or distributed application integration.

- Understanding of mainframe modernization initiatives.

- Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams.
