Job Description :

We are seeking an experienced AS/400 (IBM i) Developer with strong expertise in designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise applications on the IBM i (AS/400) platform. The ideal candidate should possess extensive hands-on experience in RPG (RPG III, RPG IV, RPGLE, Free Format RPG), COBOL/400, CL Programming, DB2/400, and SYNON (CA 2E).

The candidate will be responsible for analyzing business requirements, designing scalable technical solutions, developing high-quality applications, and supporting modernization initiatives on the IBM i platform. The role also involves executing Proof of Concepts (PoCs), preparing effort estimations, performing impact analysis, and contributing to solution architecture for enterprise projects.

The successful candidate should have excellent analytical skills, strong technical expertise in legacy and modern IBM i technologies, and the ability to work collaboratively with business stakeholders, architects, and cross-functional development teams.

Key Responsibilities :

- Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical solution designs on the IBM i (AS/400) platform.

- Design, develop, enhance, and maintain enterprise applications using RPG, RPGLE, Free Format RPG, COBOL/400, CL Programming, and SYNON (CA 2E).

- Develop scalable, efficient, and maintainable business applications following enterprise coding standards and best practices.

- Execute Proof of Concepts (PoCs) to evaluate new technologies, modernization approaches, and integration strategies on the IBM i platform.

- Prepare technical solution documents, effort estimations, implementation plans, and project timelines for development initiatives.

- Perform application impact analysis and recommend optimal technical solutions based on business requirements.

- Develop and maintain batch processing programs, interactive applications, and service programs on IBM i.

- Design and optimize DB2/400 database structures, SQL queries, stored procedures, and database performance.

- Develop and consume APIs, web services, and integration interfaces to enable communication between IBM i applications and external systems.

- Troubleshoot production issues, identify root causes, and implement permanent solutions with minimal business disruption.

- Perform code reviews and ensure compliance with coding standards, security policies, and quality guidelines.

- Collaborate with business analysts, solution architects, QA teams, infrastructure teams, and project managers throughout the software development lifecycle.

- Support application modernization initiatives by integrating traditional IBM i applications with modern technologies and cloud-based platforms where applicable.

- Participate in Agile or Waterfall project delivery methodologies based on organizational standards.

- Maintain technical documentation, deployment guides, and operational support documents.

Mandatory Technical Skills :

The candidate must possess strong hands-on experience in the following technologies :

1. IBM i (AS/400) :

- Strong experience working on IBM i (AS/400) application development and support.

- Good understanding of IBM i operating system architecture, libraries, objects, job management, and system administration concepts.

2. RPG Development :

- Strong hands-on experience in RPG III, RPG IV, RPGLE, and Free Format RPG.

- Experience developing batch programs, interactive programs, service programs, and sub-procedures.

- Strong understanding of modular programming and code optimization techniques.

3. COBOL/400 :

- Hands-on experience developing and maintaining COBOL/400 applications.

- Ability to enhance existing applications and develop new business functionalities.

4. SYNON (CA 2E) :

- Strong experience working with SYNON (CA 2E).

- Experience generating, customizing, and maintaining enterprise applications using SYNON.

5. CL Programming :

- Strong experience in CL (Control Language) programming.

- Ability to automate jobs, scheduling, batch execution, and operational processes.

6. DB2/400 :

- Strong experience working with DB2/400 databases.

- Experience writing SQL queries, embedded SQL, joins, views, stored procedures, triggers, and performance tuning.

- Knowledge of database design and normalization principles.

7. SQL :

- Strong proficiency in SQL programming.

- Experience optimizing complex SQL queries and improving database performance.

8. IBM i Development Tools :

- Experience using IBM Rational Developer for i (RDi), SEU, PDM, SDA, and DFU.

- Familiarity with debugging tools and source management on IBM i.

9. Application Integration :

- Experience integrating AS/400 applications with REST APIs, SOAP web services, FTP, MQ, or other enterprise integration technologies.

- Exposure to API enablement and IBM i modernization tools will be an added advantage.

10. Software Development Practices :

- Experience with version control systems such as Git or SVN.

- Understanding of SDLC methodologies, code review processes, and software quality standards.
