Role : Automation developer
Experience : 3 - 6 yrs
Formal title : Automation Developer
Reports to : Senior Creative Automation Engineer (capability squad) - Solution Architect Lead (Ram) - Head of COE (Praveen)
Location : India GCC - Bangalore / Mumbai / Pune / Gurgaon (per business decision)
Function : Creative Automation Hub | Centre of Excellence
DCF Level : DCF 30
Role definition :
A hands-on developer who implements automation features within a creative production capability area. The Mid Automation Developer is the day-to-day execution muscle of a squad - pairs with a Senior Engineer, takes ownership of 2 - 3 sprint stories at a time, and converts designs and prototypes into shippable, documented, tested code.
This role exists to multiply the Senior Engineer's leverage. Where the Senior designs the architecture and runs the discovery, the Mid implements, tests, and iterates. Over 12 - 18 months in role, a Mid is expected to grow into owning sprint stories end-to-end and eventually mentoring a Junior Developer. Day-to-day : 70% hands-on implementation (code, tests, documentation); 20% pair-programming and code review with the Senior; 10% participation in design reviews, demos, and team rituals.
Mission :
- Pair-program with the Senior Engineer on day-to-day automation builds.
- Convert sprint stories into production code; participate fully in design, build, test, demo, and post-go-live ramp cycles.
- Grow toward owning sprint stories independently within 12 - 18 months.
Key responsibilities :
- Implement 2 - 3 sprint stories per cycle under the Senior Engineer's direction.
- Build unit tests and basic regression checks for every script before handing off to QA.
- Convert prototype scripts and notebooks into production-grade, version-controlled, documented code.
- Maintain the team's shared script library - refactor older scripts when patterns evolve.
- Participate actively in design reviews, sprint demos, and retrospectives.
- Hand off completed work to the QA & Release Engineer with test artefacts and clear runbooks.
- Use LLM-assisted development tools (Cursor / Claude Code / Copilot) to accelerate delivery while maintaining code quality.
- Mentor junior developers when the team adds them (typically within 6 months of joining).
Tech competencies : Tier-structured capability framework. Candidates should map cleanly to the Must-have tier; Good-to-have and Exposure tiers indicate growth depth and team-add capacity.
Tier Capability :
Must-have :
- One Adobe Creative Suite app at deep scripting level (Photoshop / Illustrator / After Effects / InDesign) - ExtendScript / JSX / UXP / CEP.
- Python at working level - functions, modules, basic OOP, API integration, file I/O, error handling. JavaScript at working level - required for Adobe UXP plugins and modern automation.
- Git, JIRA, basic CI exposure - knows how to commit cleanly, raise a PR, respond to review feedback. At least one shipped automation in production (any environment, any scale).
- Familiarity with at least one GenAI tool : Adobe Firefly, ComfyUI, Stable Diffusion, ChatGPT/Claude API, Midjourney.
- Working knowledge of LLM-assisted coding - uses Cursor / Claude Code / Copilot as a daily tool. Code-review hygiene - can both give and receive feedback constructively.
Good-to-have :
- Adobe UXP plugin development beyond the basics.
- Office Scripts, VBA, Microsoft Graph API, PowerPoint scripting.
- REST API integration, webhooks, OAuth flows. Basic SQL - SELECT, JOIN, simple aggregations.
- Containerization basics (Docker).
- PDF / image processing libraries - Pillow, OpenCV, ReportLab, pikepdf. FFmpeg basics for any video-touching capability area. Unit testing with pytest / Jest / equivalent.
- Exposure / awareness : Adobe InDesign Server. DAM systems - Workfront, Frame.io, Bynder. Workflow orchestration tools - n8n, Make, Zapier.
- Cloud basics : AWS S3, Lambda; Azure equivalents; GCP equivalents.
- LangChain / agent frameworks at conceptual level.
Required experience :
- 3 - 6 years total experience in software development, creative automation, or media workflow tooling.
- Must have shipped at least one automation in production - any environment.
- Portfolio of code samples on GitHub or equivalent strongly preferred.
- Prior agency, post-production, or in-house studio experience is a plus but not required.
Educational background :
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Design, IT, or related field.
- OR strong technical bootcamp + visible portfolio.
Behavioural attributes :
- Curious; ships daily.
- Asks "can this be a script?" before doing the same task twice.
- Comfortable being directed by a Senior Engineer while developing independent execution muscle.
- LLM-native development habits - uses AI tools to move faster without losing quality.
- Owns mistakes openly; learns fast from code review.
Success metrics :
- 90% of assigned sprint stories shipped on time over a rolling quarter.
- 10% post-go-live defect rate on Mid-owned scripts.
- Demonstrable progression to owning at least one sprint story end-to-end within 6 months of joining.
- Mentors at least one Junior Developer to first solo ship by end of first year (when team has Juniors).
- Documented contributions to the team's shared pattern library.
