Description :
About Us :
Were a deeptech startup focused on quantum sensing, optics, laser engineering and laser applications, primarily specialising in the development of critical mission ready architectures, products, and solutions.
About the Role :
We are seeking a hands-on Network Engineer to design, prototype, and validate high-speed Optical Communication network architectures. The candidate will be responsible for rapidly developing testbeds, measurement frameworks, and system validation pipelines that enable evaluation of optical wireless communication links under controlled and real-world conditions.
The role sits at the intersection of optics, networking, and systems engineering, supporting the rapid transition from lab-scale optical experiments to deployable communication architectures.
What You'll Do :
Optical Communication Network Architecture Development :
- Design and implement high-speed optical wireless communication test networks using optical transceivers, single-mode laser sources, and optical receivers.
- Develop point-to-point and mesh link architectures for laboratory and outdoor testing.
- Integrate optical transmitters, receivers, and networking equipment into functional communication systems.
Rapid Prototyping of Communication Testbeds :
- Build end-to-end communication testbeds for validating links across distances ranging from meters to kilometre scales.
- Configure networking hardware including :
1. Switches, routers, optical transceivers, media converters
2. FPGA-based data interfaces
- Implement test frameworks using tools such as iperf3, packet generators, BER testers, and traffic analyzers.
Network Configuration and Management :
Configure and maintain networking infrastructure using routers and switches :
- VLAN configuration, trunking and link aggregation (LACP), routing protocols (OSPF, BGP where applicable), QoS configuration for high-priority data streams and spanning tree and redundancy mechanisms
- Troubleshoot network performance issues using: Cisco CLI diagnostics, packet capture and protocol analysis, network telemetry tools.
Link Performance Characterization :
- Measure and analyze communication performance metrics including : throughput (Gbps), latency, packet loss, bit error rate (BER) & signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)
- Evaluate system performance under varying optical conditions including : alignment errors, atmospheric turbulence, pointing jitter, optical power fluctuations.
Automated Testing and Data Analysis :
- Develop automated test pipelines for continuous monitoring and performance logging.
- Implement Python or MATLAB scripts for data analysis and visualization.
- Maintain structured datasets for communication experiments.
Field Testing and Deployment :
- Support field deployment and validation of FSOC links.
- Conduct experiments across multiple link distances and environmental conditions.
Ideal Candidate Profile :
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Optical Engineering, or Telecommunications.
- Experience with high-speed networking (10G100G Ethernet).
- Hands-on experience with : Linux networking, TCP/IP stack, packet analysis tools (Wireshark) & traffic generators.
- Familiarity with optical communication systems or fiber optics.
Required networking expertise :
- Strong experience configuring Cisco routers and switches
- Deep understanding of Ethernet, TCP/IP, and IP routing
- Experience with Layer-2 and Layer-3 networking architectures
- Hands-on experience with Linux networking environments.
Preferred Skills :
- Experience with Optical transceivers, and fiber links.
- Understanding of optical fibre and optical wireless communications.
- Experience with FPGA or embedded networking systems.
- Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or C/C++.
- Knowledge of atmospheric effects on optical propagation.
Desired Traits :
- Ability to work in diverse teams and be a team player
- Strong hands-on prototyping mindset.
- Ability to work in fast-moving experimental environments.
- Comfortable with multidisciplinary work across optics, electronics, and networking.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
